OSCAR BUTCH STEELE, SR.

Oscar Butch Steele Sr. 77, of Dizney, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 13, 2026, with his family by his side. He was born September 13, 1948, in Red Bud, KY. Butch was a retired coal miner and carpenter for over 40 years and had last worked for the Challenge Academy as a Cadre for 2 years. He was very athletic in his high school years having played football and baseball for Evarts High School and also played baseball, football and on the wrestling team for Union High School in Dowagiac, MI. He was inducted into the Evarts High School Hall of Fame in 1991. Throughout his life he had an impact on the youth of Cloverfork having coached Little League Baseball, Harlan Baseball, Evarts Softball, Evarts Baseball and Little League Football. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Pleas Eligah Steele and Sally Howard Steele; his son, Byron Steele; his grandchildren, Hank Ford and Marty Brooks Ford; his brother, Ray Steele and wife Linda; his sister, Luada Wynn; his mother-in-law, Martha Carmichael; his sister-in-law, Von Steele; his special friend Chris Taylor.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Darlene Steele of Dizney; his children Oscar Butchie Steele Jr. of Hendersonville, TN, Zachary Steele of Dizney and Tammy Steele McClain of Red Bud; his grandchildren, Ariel Bryant and Jordan, Rachel McClain and Olivia, Jarett Byron Ford and Emily and Addison Steele McClain; his great grandchildren, Carlie Jo Kennedy and Dustin Jones, Alyssa Vanwinkle, Mark Vanwinkle, Axel Boggs, Tripp Ford, Remi Ford, Laken Ford, Arabella Ford and Parker McClain; his great-great grandchildren, Adonis Vanwinkle and Emory Jones; his brothers, Bud Steele and wife Jan of Brittains Creek and Perry Steele of Brittains Creek; his brother-in-law, Royce Wynn and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at 1-PM at the Evarts Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Cornett and the Rev. John Luttrell officiating. Burial will follow at the Howard Cemetery at Red Bud with Military Rites performed by the Harlan County Honor Guard. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 17, 2026, from 5-7PM at the Evarts Baptist Church.
