Alfred “Al” Cornett, age 97, of Cumberland, KY passed away on Thursday July 01, 2021, at his home after a short illness. He was born on August 28, 1923, in Gilley, KY to the late Clark and Nancy Miniard Cornett.
A veteran of the US Army during WWII having served on D-Day, June 6, 1944, where he served as member of General Patton’s Third Army “Patton’s Own” where he received many citations which includes, Presidential Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Award, American Campaign Metal WWII, Army Good Conduct Metal, WWII Victory Metal, and the WWII Occupation Army and Airforce Metal. Al was a retired Electrician for US Steel/Arch of Kentucky, a 60-year member of the UMWA. In May 1957 he was one of several residents that went to Frankfort, KY to meet with Governor A.B. “Happy” Chandler to establish Southeast Community College in Cumberland, where he became a Woodshop Instructor for SKCTC for many years and received a resolution from the Kentucky House of Representatives for his woodworking and dulcimer making. Al was also one of several people to help establish Kingdom Come State Park. Also, a member of the Cumberland Baptist Church, a member of the Cumberland Lions Club, and a lifetime member of the VFW.
Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Geneva Cornett.
Survivors include his loving daughter, Teresa Creech, and husband Charles D. Creech of Cumberland; three grandchildren, James A Creech, and wife Becki, Ryan Creech, and Stephen Creech all of Cumberland. Four great-grandchildren, Whitney Creech, Donovan Creech, Elijah Ryan Creech, and William Creech. Also, two great-great grandchildren, J.D. Wilson and Nixyn Bynum. Also, several nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 05, 2021, at 2PM at the Dione Baptist Church with the Elder Glenn Cornett, Rev. Dennis Williams, Rev. Luke Day, and the Rev. Mitch Huff officiating. Burial will follow with Military Burial Honors by the Harlan County Honor Guard at the Clark-Cornett Cemetery in Linefork, KY. Pallbearers will be Donovan Creech, Lucas Clemons, Lance Clemons, Cory Bryant, Benjamin Bryant, Jordan Weaver, and Logan Lester.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 4th, 2021, at the Dione Baptist Church beginning at 5PM.
