Maggie Jane Hicks, 97, of Harlan passed from this life and into the gates of Heaven on June 23, 2016 at the Harlan Health & Rehabilitation Center with family and friends by her side.  Maggie was born on March 10, 1919, in Spruce Pine, N.C. and relocated to Harlan, KY in 1938 when she married Orie Hicks.  Together, they raised their family in the community of Ages.

Although Maggie did not have very much formal education, she was wise beyond measure.  She relied on hard work and her faith and trust in the Lord.  Maggie gained great pleasure in doing for others.  Through the years, gardening and cooking were two of her joys.  No person every left her house hungry.  The greatest joy of her life was her family.  She loved doing for them and no task was every too large when it came to doing for them.  Maggie taught Sunday School and VBS for over 30 years at the Ages Baptist Church and was a member of the Grays Knob Bible Church at the time of her passing.

Maggie was preceded in death by her husband Orie; father, Ralph King; mother and stepfather, Nora Snyder Carpenter and Henry Carpenter; sons, Robert and Venice Hicks; daughter, Kathleen Smith; grandsons, David Arthur and Tyler Hicks and a sister, Nancy Towe.

Survivors include her children, Bernice (Gene) Larsen, Gaston Indiana; Joyce (Bob) Gooding, St. Pete, Florida; Ken Hicks, Harlan; Hershel (Melinda) Hicks, Corbin; Linda (Craig) Shoe, Burlington, N.C.; Billy (Betsy) Hicks, Georgetown KY; Teresa (Jerry) Haynes, Harlan; grandchildren, Bobby (Karen) Larsen; Tim (Marianne) Larsen; Donna (John) Antaya; Eric (Melissa) Jones, Rhonda (Mike) Meinhardt; Sherry (David) Drewett; Ronnie (Charlene) Hendrix; Kiersten Smith; Kevin (Christina) Hicks; Michelle (Scott) Russell; Jim (Mellanie) Hicks; Stephanie (Adam) Amortnont; Ashley Hicks; Jennifer (Grant) Elam; Jessica Haynes; 23 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.  Also left to mourn her passing is special friend, Beverly White and her friends and caregivers at the Harlan Health & Rehab Center and the many children she babysat and countless friends and neighbors.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday June 27, 2016 from 5-7 P.M. at the Chapel of Henson & Rich Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Noah speaking.  A Private Family Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, June 28th 2016 at the Hicks Family Cemetery in Oneida, TN with the Rev. Dennis Chestnut officiating and music by Meredith Russell.

Memorials to Maggie are suggested to the Tyler Hicks Scholarship Fund, 1004 Arapaho Trail, Georgetown, KY 40324 or TylerHicks14Memorial.com to help deserving children with college costs.

She will be forever loved and missed.

My condolence to Mrs Hicks family on your loss. Having known her over 35 years I feel comfortable saying she had one of the most sincere hearts in this world. I never heard her utter a harsh or unkind word to or about anyone. A rare and almost unheard of quality. Take comfort in knowing that many others share your loss.
